Animals in the Wild: Black Bear in Ontario

Alyssa is a V. L. N. student currently studying in Ontario.  She submitted the following story and photos for our class blog.  Thank you, Alyssa!

We were on Lac Seul Lake near Scaler fishing. We looked up and saw a black bear swimming from the mainland to an island. We wanted to take a picture so we started up the boat and drove closer. We got pretty close, about 2 feet from the bear. He was really scared and started to swim away from us really fast so we shut the motor off and just watched him.

Now, watch the following video about 'Black bears'.  Then add a sentence to the comment section telling one thing you learned about black bears.

I just learned that black bears come in different colours and that the females weigh less than the males. I also learned that the mommy bears usually have 2 cubs that will play in the trees when they are old enough...cool! AA

We liked to see the picture you took Alyssa. We saw a mother bear playing with 3 cubs in Whistler this summer. Two of the cubs were wrestling. One cub seemed to play peek-a-boo with it's mother from behind a tree. The mother seemed to get tired or bored and would swat at the cubs at times. We didn't know that there was a "cinnamon bear". I learned that black bears look for insects in fallen logs. They also eat just about anything including ants, fish, grasses, roots and berries.

I never knew that black bears come in different colours, I thought they only come in black! This is my first time knowing that black bears almost eat anything, you know, anything. For example fruits, fish and insect are all foods for black bears! The first time I heard that these are all on black bear's menu I thought my ears has some kind of listening trouble, but when I've checked that I don't have a listening trouble I'm finally sure that was what I heard. At first I didn't believe that was what I heard because I thought that black bears only eat meat but now I know that it eats a lot of things I'm gonna to remember it!
